Popular T5 Bulb Combos

We're often asked "What T5 bulb combos do you recommend?" So, we've dedicated this blog post to answering your question! Below are some great bulb combos for ATI, Giesemann and Korallen-Zucht (KZ) premium T5 high-output fluorescent bulbs. Be sure to check out the key at the bottom of this post, which indicates which bulbs we recommend for each combo.

We have found most folks prefer a bluer look to their tank as it helps to bring our more colors in their corals. Please remember that bulb choice is ultimately a matter of personal preference and what works for one, may not work for another.

Please Note: The Kelvin or color temperature of a bulb or combination of bulbs should only be used as a general rule of thumb to compare the appearance of a light source. It should not be used as an absolute or definitive number.

  1. Good info. Can you comment on the position for each bulb to maximize the color blending?

  2. Hi,

    Thank you for the question.

It really depends how your how your fixtures two separate bulb channels are laid out. I really prefer to have my dawn to dusk to only have Blue Plus, or Blue Plus & Actinic. I really like having a nice blue dawn to dusk to highlight certain corals.

As for blending, I try to make sure that any white or purple bulb has a blue bulb next to it. You want to make sure that everything is blended well, and that one section of the tank isn't really white or overly blue as it could look odd.

I also personally like placing a blue bulb in the very front of the fixture.

Here is an example for the 14-16K combos with ATI bulbs for all three sizes according to how a ATI Sunpower has its T5 Channels

  3. Would this combination give more of a Purple/Pink hue? Is Coral Plus required in the mix? I don't want it too white or too blue. It's hard to find this info nowadays with the LED craze. Thank you, as a new hobbyist I appreciate it!

  4. Hi Frank,

The bulb combo you suggested would be very pinkish-purple. I would not recommend this combo, as I don't think you'll be pleased with it. An ATI Coral Plus bulb is not needed, but it is a very popular bulb. I would say if you are wanting a nice 20K look, I would go with 3 ATI Blue Plus, and 1 ATI Purple Plus.

Here is the layout I would do.

  5. Hi, I am building a 180g peninsula. Since I already own 2 AI Sol Blue units I will be utilizing them in the mix. I'm looking for close to 20 but not so deep blue and want to be able to support some sps without cooking all others. The very center of the tank will not have an LED also for this reason.

    Front:
    Blue plus
    Purple plus
    2x Sol Blues
    Coral plus
    Blue plus

These lights will be inside a canopy 34" from the sand bed. Will this support clams on the SB?

  6. I will be building a 180 gallon mixed reef peninsula. I already own to Aqua Illumination sol blue LED units. I am adding 4 ATI T5s. The center of the tank won't have SPS so no sol blue Led will be placed there. I would like my setup to support clams on the sand bed also. The lighting will be in a canopy approx 34" from the SB. Please let me know if you think the inteded layout will be good.

    Blue plus
    Purple plus
    2x AI Sol Blues
    Coral plus
    Blue plus

    Thank you :)

  7. I see that T5 Actinic is not popular anymore. Do you have an 8 bulb combo that's around 18-20 K color that utilizes Actinic? Doesn't actinic help with helping colors pop?
